TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) is a crucial hormone from the pituitary gland that tells your thyroid how much thyroid hormone (T3/T4) to make, controlling metabolism; a TSH test checks thyroid function, with high levels often signaling an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and low levels an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), as the pituitary tries to compensate.

What TSH Does

  • Production: Made by the pituitary gland in your brain.
  • Function: Signals the thyroid gland to produce metabolism-regulating hormones (T3 and T4).
  • Regulation:

High thyroid hormones decrease TSH; low thyroid hormones increase TSH, creating a feedback loop

    .

TSH Test Results

  • High TSH: The pituitary is working hard to stimulate a sluggish thyroid, indicating hypothyroidism (underactive).
  • Low TSH: The pituitary is not sending signals because the thyroid is overproducing hormones, indicating hyperthyroidism (overactive).
  • Normal TSH: Usually suggests normal thyroid function.

Why It's Tested

  • To diagnose thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
  • To monitor treatment for thyroid conditions.

What's Normal?

  • Normal ranges vary slightly but are often around 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/L for adults, though labs and conditions (like pregnancy or age) can change this.

In essence, TSH acts as the body's thermostat for thyroid hormones, and a blood test reveals if that system is working correctly.
