Gamma GT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) is a blood test measuring an enzyme primarily from the liver, used to detect liver/bile duct issues, differentiate from bone problems (unlike alkaline phosphatase), and screen for alcohol abuse, as elevated levels often signal liver cell damage, bile duct obstruction, or heavy drinking, though it doesn't pinpoint the exact cause.

What it is:

  • Helps protect cells from damage by metabolizing antioxidants like glutathione, but high levels indicate it's working overtime due to injury.
  • An enzyme found in many cells but abundant in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and heart

    .

What a high level means:

  • Liver & Bile Duct Issues: Often the first enzyme to rise with bile duct blockage (gallstones, tumors) or damage from hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver.
  • Alcohol Abuse: A sensitive marker for heavy, chronic alcohol use, potentially rising even without other liver enzyme changes.
  • Other Conditions: Can also be elevated with diabetes, heart failure, pancreatitis, or certain medications.

Why it's tested:

  • Differential Diagnosis: Helps doctors know if high alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is from the liver (high GGT) or bones (normal GGT).
  • Liver Screening: Indicates liver stress, even if other tests are normal, and helps monitor alcohol cessation.

Key takeaway:

  • A high GGT level signals liver or bile duct problems but needs other tests (like ALP, AST, ALT) to find the specific cause.
